I could rework my custom views so they wouldn't trip this problem anymore. I understood weird behaviour I had experienced in other situations. Running experiments, poking things, doing science – that got me brittle, buggy code that took forever to get working and that I was afraid to mess with. Opening up the black box gave me confidence.
